INTRODUCTION
==========

This mailing list has been set up so that those interested in the South of Market Resident's Association may communicate with each other. Opinions stated on the listdo not necessarily reflect the views of the SOMA Residents' Association,SOMARA members,or other list participants, and the SOMA Residents' Association may not be held liable for any list content.

The list IS moderated. Any abuse of the list rules will result in immediate expulsion from the list. There will be NO second chances.

RULES FOR USING THE SOMARA LIST
==========

1) all messages are to be posted in 'regular' text -- no blaring headlines, no HTML.

2) quarrels are not allowed on the list. List members should make their quarrelsome exchanges in private.

3) for everyone's cyber-safety, NO ATTACHMENTS are allowed.

4) Do NOT cross-post messages to or from other lists.

5) Do NOT quote a whole message, just add your comments.

6) NO "virus warnings", as they're usually bogus.

7) NO "test" messages.

8) No advertising.

9)Candidates for public office are as welcome on this list as anyone else who cares about SoMa and we welcome your participation but you MAY NOT publish your campaign literature on this list, solicit funds, gather petition signatures, or engage in other annoying practices that amount to campaign stumping. SoMaRA, under its bylaws, cannot endorse candidates, but may take stands on issues of importance to this neighborhood and therefore, discussion of such issues is permitted.

10) Do NOT post copyrighted material to the list. Articles culled from online news organizations such as sfgate.com are copyrighted and can not be legally posted to a mail list such as the SOMARA list. Post URLs that refer to the articles along with a brief summary of the article.
==========

If you stop receiving email (that is, your subscription gets deleted for any reason) PLEASE DO NOT SIMPLY TRY TO RE-SUBSCRIBE! You should attempt to find out *why* your subscription was deleted.

If we receive errors from your site indicating that mail cannot be delivered to you, for ANY reason, your subscription will be deleted! If you have subscribed to the list, then suddenly stop getting mail from the list, you might have been unsubscribed. The reason for this is that delivery of the mailing list articles can be delayed for days if delivery is deferred due to one site not accepting mail correctly.

Report errors to list-owner@somara.org

If you disagree with any of the conditions of list membership, you should unsubscribe now by sending email to: list-admin@somara.org Please put *only* the words "unsubscribe somara" in the body of the message .

1) Who can subscribe to the list?
==========
Anyone who wants to read about, and/or contribute information about living and working in San Francisco's South of Market District.

2) How do I send messages to the list?
==========
Send E-Mail to: list@somara.org This will distribute your message to everyone who is currently subscribed to the list. Note that you can only send messages to the list from the e-mail account that you subscribe from.

3) How do I unsubscribe?
==========
Send E-Mail to: list-admin@somara.org and put *only* the words "unsubscribe somara" in the body of the message. Do NOT send unsubscribe commands to the list itself as it will only be distributed to the members of the list, and will not get you unsubscribed! Send all commands to the list-admin address. If all went well, you will receive a confirmation message.

4) What is a Digest?
==========
A digest is a single E-Mail message that contains all the individual E-Mail messages that were sent to the list over a certain time period.Digests of this list will be sent daily at midnight. You can opt to receive a digest instead of receiving the individual message.

5) How do I get the list in digest form?
==========
Send E-Mail to "list-admin@somara.org". In this message, you will first UNSUBSCRIBE from the regular list, and then SUBSCRIBE to the digest version of the list. This is accomplished by putting *only* the following text in the body of the message: "unsubscribe somara subscribe somara digest"
If all went well, you will receive a confirmation message, and then each Monday and Thursday, you should receive one message from the list containing the digest.

6) I subscribed but don't receive any mail. Why?
==========
The chances are that your internet service provider has screwed up! It is unfortunate, though often the case, that E-Mail headers are not set up correctly. This means that while your subscribe command was successful (you were added to the list here at SoMaRA), mail to you bounces due to some local (to you) configuration error. This happens a lot on services like AOL, where users can change their log-on name. They subscribe to the list using "joe@aol.com", then change their name to "joe-blow@aol.com" -- now mail can't get to you because "joe@aol.com" no longer exists!

7) I suddenly stopped getting any mail from the list! Why?
==========
See above. Other problems may cause you to be dropped from the list membership. These include me receiving error messages saying that your mailbox is full, or that you're on vacation (from auto-responders). Another, rather remote, possibility, is that you have abused the list in some way, and have continued to abuse the list even after having been asked to stop by the list owner. Such actions are certain to get you dropped. List membership is a privilege, not a right. Your ability to become a member of the list, and your ability to post and/or receive messages to/from the list is also a privilege, not a right. Basically, if I receive numerous mail delivery errors, or you abuse the list, then you might be dropped. Posting binary files (such as photographs) will be grounds for immediate unsubscription. If you stop receiving email (that is, your subscription gets deleted for any reason),PLEASE DO NOT SIMPLY TRY TO RESUBSCRIBE! You should attempt to find out *why* your subscription was deleted.

8) How do I get help on other SoMaRA list commands?
==========
Send an E-mail message to "list-admin@somara.org" and put "help" as the only text in the message. You will be sent a list of commands that can be used.

9) Who do I contact in case of errors?
==========
Contact list-owner@somara.org. Explain the problem, including the output and/or messages that you received.
